Years ago, in 1953, my father told me to come home at the end of my sophomore year, saying that a woman did not need an education to be a wife and hostess. I bucked him and said I wanted to graduate. Wellesley stepped into this scenario and backed me to the hilt with scholarships and student aid so that I could continue my education. I made a gift in honor of that long ago gesture and to expand the possibilities for other young women to be given the same chance in life.

I remain very proud of Wellesley that it did not buckle to the siren song of allowing male students on the campus full time when that was popular. Wellesley has gone from strength to strength also in its careful choice of Presidents, setting a wonderful example for the young women who attend.
