As a son of Cuban immigrants, Oscar Fernandez, associate professor of mathematics, knows the unique challenges faced by STEM students who are of color, who are first-generation college students, or whose first language is not English. Fernandez and Stanley S. Chang, professor of mathematics, founded the Wellesley Emerging Scholars Initiative (WESI) in 2012 to help students from these underrepresented groups thrive in higher-level math and science courses. In the program, students benefit from close faculty mentorships and work with peers in small group settings. The new Math Colloquium Room will provide an active learning space to foster the collaboration and group problem-solving that helps students build confidence, develop greater STEM fluency, and feel like they belong.
